Azvi begins Phase 2 of the Uppsala Tramway in Sweden

  • The Seville-based company, together with its local partner NYAB, will deliver one of the country’s most significant urban mobility projects under a collaborative contract model covering detailed design and the execution of all tramway systems.

Azvi, through the NYAB-AZVI AB consortium, has been appointed by the Uppsala Municipality-led consortium as the main contractor for Phase 2 of the city’s tramway project.

With the signing of this multi-year Phase 2 contract, valued at approximately €600 million, the planning, preliminary design and preparation work carried out jointly during Phase 1 now moves into the execution stage. The project encompasses approximately 17 km of double-track tramway, 22 stops, and the associated infrastructure along the route.

Immediate activities will include detailed design, the progressive establishment of construction sites, and the planning of logistics and resources required for construction, all within the collaborative framework established between the Municipality of Uppsala, Region Uppsala, and the Azvi–NYAB consortium.

The project will be carried out in two stages: the first, due for completion in 2032, will be ready for commercial operation, while the final stage will be completed in 2034, when the tram line will connect to the national railway network at Bergsbrunna.

For Azvi, participating in this key project represents both a source of pride and a significant opportunity to bring our technical expertise and experience in major railway and tramway infrastructure projects to the development of the city of Uppsala and its public transport system.
