Azvi was one of the companies honoured at the 2024 Caminos Foundation Awards, organized by the Caminos Foundation and the College of Civil Engineers, in recognition of its contribution to the development of the Pajares Bypass, a landmark project in the high-speed connection between León and Asturias.
Azvi participated in three major projects:
- Pajares Tunnels: Azvi was part of the “Pajares Tunnel IV” joint venture, responsible for executing the Western tunnel.
- The assembly of 17.97km of track on the Campomanes-Pola de Lena section, notably the assembly of 540m of double track on prefabricated slab between tunnels, and on 120m over a viaduct. A pioneering assembly method, designed by Azvi’s construction team, was employed with great success.
- The Campomanes gauge changer.
The award ceremony was held on May 9th at Madrid’s Teatro Real as part of the celebrations for the patron saint of civil engineers, Santo Domingo de la Calzada. During the event, the 11th Segovia Aqueduct Award for Public Works and the Environment was presented to ADIF, the project’s promoter and diplomas were awarded to the more than 40 participating companies – including Azvi – that contributed to making this strategic infrastructure a reality.
An emblematic project for engineering and high-speed rail in Spain
The Pajares Bypass stands out as one of the most complex and transformative railway infrastructure projects in recent decades in Spain – a true milestone in civil engineering, sustainability, and territorial cohesion. It represents a turning point for Spanish high-speed rail.
For Azvi, being part of this challenge has been a source of pride, reaffirming our commitment to building infrastructure that improves connectivity and social well-being.
