The Lehendakari of the Basque Government, Imanol Pradales, and the Minister for Sustainable Mobility, Susana García Chueca, last Friday inaugurated the new underground Topo railway bypass – a strategic mobility project for Gipuzkoa, delivered for ETS by the joint venture formed by Azvi, COMSA, Nortúnel and Campezo.
The project included the construction of a new 2.2 km section, developed almost entirely in tunnel, as well as the new underground Pasaia Station:
- 2,124 m of tunnel excavated using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM).
- 196 m of cut-and-cover tunnel constructed between diaphragm walls.
- 1,940 m of slab track and 140 m of ballasted track.
- Redevelopment of Gure Zumardia Square, fully integrated into the station’s new surroundings.
The event included an inaugural journey between Altza and Pasajes, ahead of the new section entering service on Saturday, doubling the service frequency between the two stations to a train every 7.5 minutes.
Representing Azvi were General Manager José María Martínez Benavente, Director of Civil Works Carlos Puebla, Northern Regional Manager for Civil Works José Antonio Varela and Project Manager Ignacio Martín Bernal, who accompanied the Lehendakari and the Minister alongside Deputy Minister Miguel Ángel Páez, ETS General Manager Antonio López, Euskotren General Manager Javier Seoane and former Minister of Transport Iñaki Arriola. San Sebastián Mayor Jon Insausti and Pasajes Mayor Teo Alberro were also in attendance.
