Azvi, in joint venture with Tria, has been awarded the contract to build a gauge changer at Irún station, marking a new milestone in the future of rail freight transport.
This pilot project aims to approve a gauge changer system that will boost rail freight traffic, reducing costs and transport times in areas where different track gauges coexist.
The construction of this gauge changer will allow commercial trials to be carried out in real-world conditions thanks to the EAVM (Variable Gauge Freight Axis) technology developed by Adif as part of an ambitious R&D&I program, in which Azvi has been collaborating and participating for over a decade.
The new contract includes:
- Construction of the gauge changer at Irún station, including both the track assembly and the overhead contact line installation. ,.
- Replacement of sleepers, rail supports, and rails, and mechanical compensation of the overhead contact line.
- Drainage system and integration with the existing stormwater network.
The variable gauge axle for freight rolling stock solves the problem of networks with different track gauges by enabling wagons to switch gauges automatically without the need to transfer cargo or swap axles for different gauges in the train.
