- The expansion works for the new airport concession will involve an investment of €51 million, tripling the size of the passenger terminal from 4,360 to 13,260 m2.
The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by the Chilean Minister of Public Works, Jessica López Saffie, and other local authorities, as well as representatives of Urales Chile, responsible for carrying out the works, and Cointer, which will operate the airport infrastructure until 2042. The Minister was accompanied by the Undersecretary of Tourism, Verónica Pardo; the Presidential Delegate of Coquimbo, Galo Luna; and the Ceremonial Governor, Javier Vega.
The project, which represents a €51 million investment, will triple the surface area of the passenger terminal, from 4,360 m² to 13,260 m².
The work will include two new boarding bridges (there are currently none), three baggage carousels, four screening machines and 16 airline counters. In addition, 175 new parking spaces will be added (from 231 to 406) for taxis, buses, minibuses, rental cars and others. There will also be new access roads, traffic lights, bus stops and shelters, as well as landscaping and green areas.
The construction works are expected to create around 500 direct jobs, in addition to other employment opportunities created by the modernization of the infrastructure.
The Minister emphasized that “beginning the works is an important milestone in the transformation of this airport. These will be carried out by the concession company that has been awarded the contract to build and operate La Florida Airport for the next 20 years. This work will triple the size of the passenger terminal and provide it with the state-of-the-art infrastructure that we are implementing nationwide. Energy efficiency, new access and mobility for everyone. It is a great pleasure because this region deserves an airport of this standard”.
